Once inside a classroom dreary, while we pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a
large and boring
volume of Prentice Hall Literature,
While we nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at the classroom door.
" 'Tis some student" the teacher muttered, "tapping at my classroom door;
Only this, and nothing more."
But the teacher swung the door wide open, and there no student stood; so we focused,
On our tasks, but soon again there came a tapping somewhat louder than before.
“ ‘Tis some student,” the teacher cried; “Now all you work while I find the culprit that still hides.”
But no student in the classroom had made the quiet tapping, and so the teacher continued to search for the reason of the incessant rapping at the classroom door.
“What if it’s at the window?” a student wondered. To the window the teacher headed, opening it wide, and the air inside billowed, but no creature, nor student of the teacher, was to be seen.
But then a peeping echoed from the window; the students raced outside to find the cheeping; the teacher running after; “But I saw no creature,” cried the teacher.
But the students paid no heed, and continued searching in their greed; but no fowl was to be seen.
And so they sadly headed back inside, thoughts consumed by that which hides; When one student spied six peeping chicks in the brush.
“Hush,” the teacher said as she brought the chicks back inside; who to this day have no need to hide.
